These two numbers get used interchangeably in casual conversation, but they're measuring genuinely different things — and mixing them up is where a lot of the confusion around BMI comes from.
BMI measures a ratio
BMI is weight divided by height squared. It doesn't know anything about what that weight is made of — muscle, bone, organs, water, or fat. It's a proxy, built for speed and simplicity, not a direct measurement of anything on your body.
Body fat percentage measures composition
Body fat percentage is an estimate of how much of your total weight is fat tissue, versus lean mass like muscle and bone. It's measured with methods like skinfold callipers, bioelectrical impedance scales, DEXA scans, or underwater weighing — each with its own trade-off between cost, accessibility, and accuracy.
Why they can disagree
Because BMI can't distinguish muscle from fat, two people with the same BMI can have very different body fat percentages. A powerlifter and a sedentary office worker of the same height and weight might post an identical BMI while having a 15-point difference in body fat — one of the clearest illustrations of why BMI alone isn't the full picture.
Which one should you track?
For most people without access to lab-grade equipment, BMI remains a reasonable, free, five-second screening number — as long as you remember its limits. Body fat percentage, when measured consistently with the same method and conditions, tends to be more informative for tracking changes in body composition over time, especially during a training programme aimed at building muscle or losing fat specifically.
A practical approach: use BMI as a quick check-in, and if the number surprises you or sits at the edge of a category, look at body fat percentage, waist circumference, or how your clothes fit before drawing any conclusions.
