These two numbers get used almost interchangeably in fitness apps and diet plans, but they answer completely different questions. BMR tells you what your body burns doing nothing at all. TDEE tells you what your body burns in an actual day, once you add movement, digestion, and everything else life involves. Mixing them up is one of the most common reasons people build a calorie target that's wrong from the start.
BMR: the engine idling
Basal Metabolic Rate is the energy your body needs just to stay alive — keeping your heart beating, lungs breathing, cells repairing, and brain running, while you lie completely still and fasted. It's usually estimated with a formula like Mifflin-St Jeor, using your height, weight, age, and sex as inputs. For most adults, BMR makes up 60–75% of total daily energy use, which is why it's treated as the foundation everything else gets built on.
TDEE: the whole day
Total Daily Energy Expenditure takes that baseline and adds everything else: the calories burned digesting food, walking around, doing chores, and any deliberate exercise. It's typically calculated by multiplying BMR by an activity multiplier — anywhere from about 1.2 for a mostly sedentary day to 1.9 or higher for someone training twice a day. TDEE is the number that actually matters for weight goals, because it reflects real daily energy use, not a resting-only estimate.
Why the mix-up causes problems
A common mistake is eating "at BMR" thinking it's a safe baseline, when in reality that's often several hundred calories below what the body burns in a normal day — sometimes leading to excessive, unintended deficits. The opposite mistake also happens: using TDEE as if it were BMR and underestimating how much of that number depends on activity that can vary day to day.
- For weight loss: the target is usually TDEE minus a moderate deficit (commonly 300–500 kcal/day), not BMR alone.
- For maintenance: eating close to TDEE keeps weight roughly stable.
- For muscle gain: a modest surplus above TDEE, paired with resistance training, tends to work better than a large one.
Both numbers move over time
Neither BMR nor TDEE is fixed. BMR shifts with age, muscle mass, and significant weight change. TDEE shifts with how active a week actually was — a desk-bound week and a week of daily training sessions can have very different TDEE even for the same person. That's why these figures work best as a starting estimate to adjust from, using real-world results over a few weeks, rather than a number to treat as gospel.
